Runs a Workers AI model under a Cloudflare account, named as the string's host or by `CLOUDFLARE_ACCOUNT_ID`. The model's protocol sets what it does:

| `protocol=` | Models | Runs as |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `typesafe` | Decision models, such as Clef | [`typesafe`](/reference/llm_connections/typesafe) does: navigator only, choosing among listed alternatives |
| `openai` | Chat models, such as `@cf/openai/gpt-oss-120b` | A chat provider, which also formats and writes |

Without `protocol=`, a model under `@cf/cloudflare/clef` speaks `typesafe` and any other `openai`. A bare model name names one of Cloudflare's own, so `clef` is `@cf/cloudflare/clef`.

## Options

| Option | On Cloudflare |
| --- | --- |
| `protocol` | `typesafe` or `openai`, from the model when absent |
| `gateway` | The AI Gateway each call goes through, as `CLOUDFLARE_GATEWAY_ID` names it |
| [`vision`](/reference/llm_connections/options#vision-and-frames) | A decision model is shown screenshots at `stall:3`. A chat model is off by default; `vision=true` opts in one that reads images |
| [`body.<path>`](/reference/llm_connections/options#request-body-fields) | Chat models; fields OpenAI's chat request names |
| `header`, `max_tokens`, `temperature`, `top_p`, `frames`, `timeout` | As [listed](/reference/llm_connections/options); the chat options apply to chat models |

A Clef navigator with a writer:
