# Timeouts

`--timeout SECONDS` caps the total time for the entire render, including
encoding. It counts from when ZShot receives the request, so time waiting in the
server's queue and resolving a WARC's sitemap count against it. Pass `0`, or use
`--no-timeout`, to disable the cap. Without an explicit
value the default is chosen from the output type:

| Output | Default |
| --- | --- |
| Static content (PNG, JPEG, PDF, …) | 10s |
| LLM output (`llm_text`, `llm_json`) | 10s, plus the formatter's reply timeout: 45s unless set |
| Animated images and video | `max(duration × 10, 60s)` |
| LLM navigation (`--navigate`) | the output's default, plus `--navigator-max-steps × (reply timeout + --navigator-step-timeout)`: 610s unless set |
| WARC and WACZ | none. Each page is bounded by `--crawl-page-timeout`, default `max(10s, --wait-for + 10s)`. |

A `--wait-for` adds its wait to the 10s.

An LLM output's default allows its formatter one reply: the model's
[reply timeout](/reference/llm_connections/options), or 35s where it has
none.

A navigation's default allows each of its steps one reply from the model and one
action on the page. The reply timeout is the longest among its navigators: each
one's [`?timeout=`](/reference/llm_connections/options), or
[`--navigator-step-timeout`](/reference/flags/navigator/navigator-step-timeout) where
none is given.

A model with `?timeout=0` waits without limit, so its request has no default timeout.
Every other limit still applies: each action on the page has `--navigator-step-timeout`,
and each other model its own reply timeout.
